Obstacle Racing… Fad or Fun?

On Saturday, November 17th Fenway Park will host a Spartan Sprint Obstacle Race. It’s 2.75 grueling miles with 15+ obstacles.

A few employees from The Clubs at Charles River Park have been training for months, including, Katie Morgis, Danny “Murph” Murphy and “Topher” Adam Marks.

Their preparation includes climbing stairs with weighted backpacks, hiking in the Freetown Forest (also with a 30lb pack!) and taking part in exercises suggested via Spartan’s daily workout emails.

I sat down with our three brave staffers to get some details on how participation in this race evolved. Murph participated in a Spartan race previously in Amesbury, MA, he learned about the event at Fenway and “was looking to have some fun at an amazing Boston landmark.”

Murph emailed the health club staff to see if anyone else wanted to join him and that got Adam and Katie on board. Adam confided, “My ultimate goal is to finish the race in it’s entirety with minimal injury and embarrassment.”

Friendly competition abounds as Katie points out, “I don’t wanna lose to the two guys!”

We’ll be following this daring, spunky trio as they reach the finish line on Saturday. Check Facebook and Twitter for photos & race day info.
