3 Reasons You’re Not Getting Results

There are several reasons why people don’t get the results they want from their workouts, but these are three of the most common I see:

Consistency

When weighed against all other factors, this is the most important. Exercise has to be consistent over the long term in order to produce results.  If you have trouble sticking to your program, focus on overcoming obstacles before worrying about any other details in your program.  It really doesn’t matter what you do if you don’t do it consistently.

Not working hard enough

Getting results doesn’t mean you have to kill yourself, but you do need to work hard.  I’ve found that there’s often confusion about the difference between exercising for health and exercising for fitness.  A daily 30 minute walk is great for your health, but its effectiveness is limited if you want to lose body fat, change your physique, or be a better athlete, which are fitness goals.  To achieve better fitness, progressively increase your exercise intensity, which will continue to improve your health, but also improve your fitness.

Not recovering adequately

Exercise is just a signal for your body to change (and get better).  The change itself happens after your workout, during recovery.  If you skimp on sleep, don’t eat healthfully, or can’t control your stress, you won’t ever realize the full effect of you workout efforts.
