Confessions From a Cardio Rut
I am no different than anyone else, a creature of habit who loves her routine. I like to think I am a flexible person, but when I recently took a hard look at my cardio routine for the last year, it appears that I am not…
For the past 12 months, I have been in a comfortable routine. I used the elliptical machines at CRP for 30-45 min at least 3-4 days per week, and was quite pleased with myself, surrounded by many of the same people each week. The equipment would show that I had burned a solid 400-500 calories each time. However, one thing was slightly concerning, but I pushed it out of mind. I didn’t seem to be getting in better shape. I just seemed to be maintaining my current level of fitness.
Recently, a friend challenged me to do a long hike in July. I decided that I had better start doing some climbing in order to get ready for the trek. The very next day, I started using the Stepmill at the gym. In just 15 min, my heart was pounding so hard that I felt like I was going to pass out. I started circuit training with the Stepmill and treadmill (15 min each at high intensity) for a couple of weeks.
I consistently got a better workout and I was losing weight too! It looks like all of the research about High Intensity Circuit Training was actually true. I joined the people who were getting results; I have lost 2 inches at my waist since I started!
So if you are anything like me and a little too comfortable with your cardio routine, consider speaking with one of the personal trainers about incorporating High Intensity Training. You just might find that they push you out of your comfort zone and you feel a little more comfortable in your bathing suit the next time you are at the pool!
