Invest in Yourself


Spring is probably my favorite season.  Emerging from a harsh New England winter to feel everything waking up again gives me a great feeling of renewal.  This is the perfect season to start fresh and spend time on yourself – both your physical and mental well being.

I recently had a conversation with a client about what’s most important in life – the all-to-common conflict of career demands versus everything else that’s important (or should be important).  It got me thinking about the whole idea on a larger scale.  We spend time and money on all kinds of things that seem important, but don’t really help us in the long run.  Yet, we’re resistant to making sure there’s time in the daily grind to exercise, eat good food, nurture our relationships, or simply get to bed for a good night’s sleep.

Exercise and good nutrition are probably the two closest (and safest) things we have to the fountain of youth.  People who exercise regularly and eat right have better energy, a more positive mood and sense of well being.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t see going through life any other way!

I’m sure it comes down to a simple matter of personal philosophy; either certain things are important or they’re not.  This seems universally true though; there will always be more work to do no matter how much you power through it, but there won’t always be another opportunity to improve your health and well being.

Motivation shouldn’t come from someone like me professing the benefits of good diet and exercise to guilt you into changing or reinforcing behavior.  You should want to do it selfishly, in order to preserve your health to enjoy life and the things you love as long as you can.  The bottom line is that nobody else can do it for you; you have to do it for yourself.  Invest in yourself every day and reap the dividends your entire life!
